Travel eSIM with a phone number? Data-only, calls and SMS
Does a travel eSIM come with a phone number? What Data only and Data + SMS plans cover, WhatsApp calling, and how to keep SMS codes working abroad.

On this page
A travel eSIM’s plan page lists its service as “Data only” (mobile internet, no calls or SMS) or “Data + SMS”, so a phone number is something to check, not assume. A data-only travel eSIM does not add ordinary carrier calls or SMS to that travel line: WhatsApp calls can use its internet data, while a text sent to your home number still needs that number’s service. Decide which tasks you need before choosing a package.
Use the selected package’s own service details as your checklist. A SIM format or package name alone does not answer whether it meets your communication needs. Record the services included on each line before buying.
Match the connection to the conversation
| Your task | Service to check | Preparation before departure |
|---|---|---|
| Open maps, email or booking websites | Mobile internet | Save key bookings and addresses offline |
| Call someone inside WhatsApp | Internet and a usable WhatsApp account | Confirm the other person uses the app |
| Call a hotel’s ordinary telephone number | Carrier voice or a suitable separate calling service | Ask which contact methods the hotel accepts |
| Receive an SMS sent to your home number | Overseas service on that home line | Check your carrier’s roaming terms |
| Receive an SMS sent to a travel number | SMS capability on that specific travel line | Confirm the package and recipient number |
This table is a planning tool. It does not establish that a particular app, bank or phone service will work with every package.
Does a travel eSIM come with a phone number?
Searches such as “turkey esim with number” or “ireland esim with phone number” are asking whether a travel eSIM can give you a local number to call and text on. That depends on the plan, and the plan page says which. Its service line reads “Data only” (mobile internet, with no calls or SMS on that plan) or “Data + SMS” (SMS is included). Neither wording lists ordinary voice calls, so do not buy a plan expecting to receive calls. If a plan page does not state the service, treat it as unknown and ask before you rely on it.
What a local number would give you. A number in the destination’s own format lets local people and services reach you the way they reach residents: a driver or delivery rider who rings or texts, a restaurant confirming a booking by text, or a service that sends a one-time code to a local number. A data-only eSIM cannot receive those calls or texts, so list which of your tasks assume one. Some trips need none of them, and for the rest in-app chat and internet calls may do the job.
Options when you need more than data
- Keep your home line on for SMS. On a dual-SIM phone the home line can stay on for calls and texts while the travel eSIM carries data. Apple says only one number uses cellular data at a time, and that if data roaming is on for the number that uses data, your voice-only number disables Visual Voicemail and MMS (Apple Dual SIM). Ask your carrier what incoming SMS and calls cost abroad before you rely on this.
- Use internet calls and messages. WhatsApp says its voice calls use the phone’s internet connection rather than plan minutes, and data charges may apply. Ask hotels and pickups for a WhatsApp number or an email address when you book.
- Try Wi-Fi calling on your home line. Apple says your carrier must offer Wi-Fi Calling and that not all Wi-Fi networks work with it (Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling page). Ask your carrier whether it works for you abroad before you leave.
- Move verification away from SMS. For essential accounts, see whether the service can send codes by email or an authenticator app, and test that before departure.
- Buy a local SIM for a long stay. A carrier in the destination can sell a SIM with a number, and rules differ by country. Turkey’s government help centre says a phone brought from abroad can be used for up to 120 days without being registered (Turkiye.gov.tr), so a short trip is unaffected but a longer stay with a Turkish SIM needs the phone registered to keep service. Check the carrier’s and regulator’s current rules.
How WhatsApp uses a data-only eSIM
WhatsApp says its voice calls use the phone’s internet connection rather than mobile-plan minutes. That makes app calling a different task from dialling a number through your phone’s ordinary calling service. Data charges can still apply. WhatsApp’s calling explanation
Prepare the account you intend to use, then try messaging and calling a travel contact before departure. Ask accommodation or a pickup provider whether it accepts WhatsApp; a telephone number on a booking is not a confirmed WhatsApp contact. Keep an email address or another agreed channel in your arrival note.
Plan for the people on the other end too. A family member who uses only ordinary calls needs a different arrangement from someone already using your chosen app. For a group trip, agree on one contact channel and a meeting point that does not depend on messages arriving immediately.
Keep your home number and travel data separate
On supported dual-SIM devices, you can choose different lines for mobile data and voice. Apple’s guide describes selecting and labelling plans, and says only one number can use cellular data at a time; Google documents separate data, call and text preferences on Pixel, with only one SIM as the default for data. The available combination depends on the device and carrier. Apple Dual SIM, Google Pixel Dual SIM
Use labels you will recognise when tired, such as “Home” and “Trip data.” Then work through this checklist:
- Confirm the phone supports the intended active-SIM combination.
- Select the intended travel line for mobile data when the package instructions tell you to activate it.
- Review the default line for ordinary calls and SMS.
- Check automatic data-switching settings so you understand which line may carry data.
- Follow each line’s own roaming instructions; a travel plan and home plan can have different requirements.
On iPhone, the data selection is under Cellular or Mobile Data; on Pixel, start at Network & internet, then SIMs. Menu labels vary by software version. Use the manufacturer instructions above for your device.
Leaving a home line enabled is a separate cost decision. Ask your carrier to explain the overseas charges and conditions for incoming calls, outgoing calls, SMS and data before leaving. Record the settings it recommends for the services you intend to keep.
Do not confuse internet access with SMS verification
A working map proves that internet is available; it does not prove that an SMS to your home number can arrive. For each essential account, write down where its verification message goes and how you regain access if that channel is unavailable.
Check banking and booking access before the flight. Save official recovery instructions somewhere you can open without logging in again. Avoid changing phones or account details just before departure unless you have time to confirm access. These are preparation steps, not a guarantee about a specific service’s verification system.
When should you consider a plan with voice or SMS?
Consider something beyond a data-only line when an essential task needs ordinary telephone service: calling businesses that do not accept app calls, receiving calls on a local number, or using a service whose requirements you have checked. Our plan pages show a “Data only” or “Data + SMS” line, and neither lists ordinary voice calls, so for calls look at your home line or a local carrier’s SIM instead. Confirm incoming and outgoing capabilities, included destinations, registration requirements and charges.
For installation timing, use the pre-departure eSIM checklist. For the communication decision, start with three contacts: your accommodation, your travel companions and one essential account. Record how each expects to reach you. That gives you a clear reason to choose data-only or add telephone service. When you have decided, browse travel eSIM plans by destination and read the service line on each plan page.
Common questions
Can I get a Turkey eSIM with a phone number?
Check the service line on the plan page for Turkey eSIM plans. “Data only” means no calls or SMS on that plan, and “Data + SMS” includes SMS; neither lists ordinary voice calls. If you need to receive local calls or texts, keep your home line on or buy a SIM from a Turkish carrier, and use WhatsApp or email for hotels and tours.
Is there an Ireland or Europe eSIM with calls and data?
Our plan pages show “Data only” or “Data + SMS”, and neither lists ordinary voice calls; calls through apps such as WhatsApp use the plan’s data instead. Compare Ireland eSIM plans or Europe eSIM plans, and use the Europe eSIM data guide to check that a plan covers every country on your route.
Can I receive SMS verification codes with a data-only eSIM?
Not on the travel line. A code sent to your home number needs service on that home line, so check your carrier’s roaming terms and keep the line on, or move the account’s verification to email or an authenticator app before you leave. Test the route while you still have home service.
Does WhatsApp work on a data-only eSIM?
Yes for messaging and calls over the internet. WhatsApp says voice calls use your phone’s internet connection rather than plan minutes, and data charges may apply. WhatsApp sends its registration code to the number you registered, so keep that number reachable if you plan to set up a new phone around your trip.
Can I keep my home number and use a travel eSIM for data?
On a phone that supports it, yes. Label the two lines, choose the travel line for mobile data, and set the default line for calls and texts. Apple and Google both document choosing the data line separately, and each line has its own roaming setting.
